How to Remove Outputs from the Windows Desktop

Remove the outputs that Backstage uses for rendering from the Windows desktop. A removed output is no longer visible to Windows at all — it does not appear as a connected display anywhere in the OS, including the NVIDIA Control Panel. From Windows' point of view, nothing is plugged in. Backstage, however, still sees and uses those outputs. This is how you hand rendering outputs to Backstage exclusively, and it improves rendering performance.

Removing outputs is the recommended configuration for any Backstage installation. Remove every output — or Mosaic group — that Backstage renders to. This uses the Windows Specialized Displays feature to take the outputs out of the OS entirely and give them to Backstage without interference from the desktop compositor, notifications, or stray windows.

Requires the Administrator role, and plan before removing everything. A removed output is invisible to Windows, so there is no local screen to work on unless you keep one. Make sure you have remote access to the server — the System Management web interface, VNC, or the Remote UI — before you remove the last visible display.

The NVIDIA Control Panel will look empty — this is expected. Because removed outputs disappear from the OS entirely, opening the NVIDIA Control Panel on a server whose outputs are all removed shows no connected displays. Nothing is broken. The removed outputs are managed from the System Management web interface (Configure > GPU > Desktop), which is where to look — not the NVIDIA Control Panel or Windows display settings.

Before you start

  • You are signed in to System Management as an Administrator
  • Any EDID overrides those outputs need are already applied — EDID is locked while an output is removed from the desktop
  • You can reach the server without a local screen, in case removal leaves you without one
  • A maintenance window — removing or returning outputs rearranges the desktop and blanks displays

Steps

1. Open the Desktop tab

In the System Management sidebar, under Configure > GPU, select Desktop. Outputs on the Windows desktop lists each output with its resolution and an On desktop column reading yes or no.

A Mosaic grid appears as a single row covering all its members, and is removed or returned as a whole. You cannot remove one screen out of a grid.

2. Remove the outputs Backstage uses

Each row carries one button, reflecting its current state: Remove from desktop for an output Windows is currently driving, or Return to desktop for one that is already removed. Removing asks for confirmation; returning does not. The desktop rearranges as the change takes effect and the page reloads.

Remove every output or Mosaic group that Backstage renders to. The output disappears from Windows entirely — from the taskbar, from Display Settings, from the NVIDIA Control Panel — but Backstage continues to render to it at full performance.

3. Use the bulk actions where they fit

The toolbar offers Remove all from desktop and Return all to desktop, both confirmed before they run. Remove all from desktop is the quickest way to hand every output to Backstage at once. Return all to desktop is the standard recovery move when you need to bring everything back under Windows control.

4. If the change does not take, restart

When a change does not fully succeed, the page says so and offers a Restart server button. This is expected behaviour rather than a fault: removing and returning displays can get stuck inside the graphics driver, and a restart reliably clears that state.

Do not repeat a failed removal or return several times hoping it will take. Once the page reports it did not fully succeed, restart the server — repeating the operation tends to leave the driver in a worse state.

Common Mistakes

  • Removing every display with no remote access arranged. There is then no local screen to work on. Confirm the web interface, VNC, or the Remote UI is reachable before using Remove all from desktop.

  • Opening the NVIDIA Control Panel and thinking the server is broken. Removed outputs do not appear in the NVIDIA Control Panel — this is by design, not a fault. Manage removed outputs from the System Management web interface.

  • Removing an output, then trying to change its EDID. EDID is locked while an output is removed from the desktop. Return it, set the EDID, then remove again.

  • Looking for a removed output on the Outputs tab. It will not be there — that tab only lists outputs Windows is driving. Return it to the desktop first.

  • Retrying a failed change instead of restarting. The page surfaces the restart hint for a reason. A stuck driver state is cleared by a reboot, not by repeating the operation.

  • Expecting to remove one screen out of a Mosaic grid. The grid is one entry and moves as a unit. Clear the grid first if you need its members handled individually.

Tips

  • Remove every output Backstage renders to. This is the recommended production configuration — it eliminates OS interference and improves rendering performance.

  • Return all to desktop is the first thing to try when a display configuration has become hard to reason about. Getting everything back under Windows gives you a known state to work from.

  • Keep at least one screen — a small local monitor or the BMC console output — on the desktop on a server people work on physically.

  • Removal state is restored after a reboot only when the Options tab's restore settings are enabled. Turn them on once the layout is right.
