Video: Create a Display

A Display is a screen that shows content directly — an LED wall, a monitor, a video wall. There is no projector geometry involved, which makes it the simplest object you can put in a scene and the shortest route to an image on a real screen.

Before you start

  • The pixel dimensions of your real screen — or at least its aspect ratio

  • The screen connected before Backstage was started, so its GPU output exists to route to

1. Add the display

In Scene Objects, click + to open the create menu.

Hover Display, then Flat. The size fields and the Create button open right there in the third level of the menu — there is no separate dialog.

The same menu offers Curved, Dome, Disc and Cube, and one level up it offers Projection Surface instead of Display. Pick Display when content is addressed in pixels and no projector is involved — see What is the difference between a Display and a Surface?

2. Set its size

The Size field takes the width and height of your screen in metres. Then click Create.

Only the ratio between the two numbers matters. Get it right and content with the same aspect ratio fills the whole output. Easiest route: divide your resolution by a thousand and enter that — 3840 × 2160 becomes a size of 3.84 × 2.16.

3. Place it in the scene

With the display selected, open Transformation in the Inspector and set its position and rotation so the scene resembles the room.

With a single display this changes nothing you can see. It pays off with several: a scene whose objects sit where the real screens sit can be read at a glance by whoever opens the project next.

4. Route it to an output

A display produces no signal until it reaches a physical output. Open Video Routing.

Click the cell where your display's row meets the GPU output the screen is plugged into.

Done when

The Brainsalt default grid appears on the physical screen straight away — that is the display working, before any content exists. To put something else on it, open Default Asset in the Inspector and pick an image or test pattern.

Black bars you did not expect mean the ratios disagree. The content's aspect ratio does not match the display's, and Letterbox — the default fit mode — is preserving the content by adding bars. Correct the display's ratio rather than its size, or set that asset's fit mode (Stretch, Letterbox, Crop) deliberately.

This is the workflow for displays and LED screens, and it also covers a single-projector installation. For several projectors on one screen, start with the Projection Setup Wizard instead.
