Workflow

Last updated 6 August 2026

Everything you do in Backstage, in the order you do it — from an empty project to a show that runs on its own.

The sections below are arranged as a build. Each one produces something the next one needs, and each says what "done" looks like, so you can tell you have finished a stage before moving past it.

Want one guided path instead of every option? Your First Project walks the shortest route end to end. This section is the same journey with the choices spelled out.

The build, in order

Stage

What it produces

Done when

1.Scene

A model of the room — the screens, and for projection the projectors that cover them

The scene contains the screen and whatever lights it, sized and placed as in the room

2.Output

The connection to real hardware, video and audio

Every screen shows a signal on its physical device, and audio reaches its outputs

3.Warp, Blend & Black Level

A correct image on a projected screen

A test grid is continuous across the seams and reaches the edges

4.Content

Media in the project — files, live sources, captures

The asset appears in the Assets window without an error state, and previews

5.Playback

Content arranged in time, and a running order

The show runs start to finish without anyone touching the machine

Not every stage applies to every job. Stage 2 is skipped when you are preparing a project away from the installation — build it now, connect it on site. Stage 3 applies only to projection; a display shows content directly and needs none of it.

Then, as the job needs them

These are not steps in the build. They are tools used across it, and you reach for them when the show calls for one.

Section

Reach for it when

Remote Control

Something outside Backstage has to drive the show — a control system, a browser, a stream-deck surface, a script

Node Editor

The show needs logic the built-in windows do not cover

Monitoring

Checking it runs cleanly before an audience arrives, or finding out why it does not

Conductor

Part of the show — lighting, motors, effects — is programmed in Conductor

Complete builds

Whole jobs, start to finish, for particular kinds of installation — an LED facade, a dome, an L-shaped wall, a segmented screen, a stereoscopic rig:

Examples

How each section is arranged

The same shape everywhere, so you can skim:

  • Do this in order — the short path through that stage. Where two routes reach the same result, they are offered as a choice with one shared "done when", not as consecutive steps.

  • More options — situational pages. Nothing there is a step; open one when your setup calls for it and skip the rest.
